The island is located off Florida's southwest coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The subtropics has obvious wet and dry seasons. The majority of preciptation occurs between June and October. Tropical cyclones, such as hurricanes, typically occur in the summer and fall months - they usually form in the tropics and venture into the subtropical regions.
